Mojave National Preserve, CA
Introduction | Attractions and Activities | Travel Basics
The town of Mojave, at the northwest corner of the desert, is the gateway for many natural attractions. Like all deserts, it is a living place, home to a myriad of plants and animals uniquely adapted to this environment. In fact, Mojave hosts about 200 endemic plant species not found in the adjacent deserts. Mojave Yucca and Desert Spanish Bayonet are prominent. Creosote Bush, Shadscale, Big Sagebrush, Bladder-sage, bursages, and Blackbush are customary here. Arroyos occasionally host Catclaws, but unlike the Sonoran Desert, there are few trees here. The exception is the Joshua-tree, an unusual tree-like yucca that grows in forests here. It grows only in this desert, and only at higher elevations. Rose-colored sand dunes, volcanic cinder cones, and mile-high mountains complete the scene. The Mojave National Preserve encompasses 1.6 million acres of mountains, jumble rocks, desert washes, and dry lakes. Come, explore it for yourself. |
