Near the turn of the 20th century, a group of Japanese farmers came to this agricultural region to grow pineapples. The Yamato Colony was successful, and with the expansion of Henry Flagler's railroad from West Palm Beach to Miami, farmers were easily able to export their produce. Much of the land they farmed is now occupied by the Boca Raton Airport and Florida Atlantic University. One farmer, George Morikami, donated 200 acres for use as a park after his death. Today Morikami Park has become one of Palm Beach County's top tourist destinations, attracting visitors from all over the world to the only museum of Japanese culture in the US.

Throughout the 20th century this farming community grew into a lively city known for its unique architecture. Its reputation as a resort quickly spread, and was popular with artists, writers and cartoonists who came to escape Northern winters. Cartoonists Fontaine Fox and W.E. Pat Enright were among them.

Modern Delray Beach is a leader in the state's historic preservation movement, with several neighborhoods designated as historic districts. Its central location makes it an ideal starting point for tours of both Palm Beach and Broward counties.
